WELCOME TO THE CHILVERS FAMILY DNA TESTING PROJECT

The CHILVERS Surname DNA Project was officially launched on 1st March 2007 when our Group was registered with "Family Tree DNA" and given the discounted rate for each individual test.

Having read many success stories in matches with DNA for genealogical purposes we decided that it is time to try to advance our research in the many cases where there are no written documents to help to prove our ancestry.

The success of the project will be dependant upon the involvement of a good number of participants in the testing group. The validity of the family history research connected with each ancestral line is also very important.

Please contact as many CHILVERS researchers as you can and encourage their participation.

The testing will be for the male Y-chromosome that is passed only from father to son. Therefore the requirement is for a male with the surname of CHILVERS or CHILVER.  Female researchers will need to obtain a DNA sample from a male relative who is a direct descendant of one of their male CHILVERS ancestors.

We have chosen Family Tree DNA as our testing company as they are leaders in the field.

The testing laboratory will be analyzing either the 12, 37 or 67 markers of the Y-chromosome. If the markers of two or more male individuals match, it will indicate they descend from a common male CHILVERS ancestor although it will not identify the specific ancestor. A match with the highest number of markers is most significant, however which test to order is a personal decision. It is possible to upgrade from the 12 marker test to a higher number of markers at a later date if desired although the total cost is higher than ordering the greater number of markers in the first place.  I will initially be using a 37 marker test and will see where that leads me.

To answer your questions and to join the group please go to Family Tree DNA and follow the "PROJECTS" link to the CHILVERS Surname DNA Project.
